Understanding power by noam chomsky5/30/2023 ![]() ![]() Here was this book which proved that there were really no Palestinians! Of course, the implicit message was, if Israel kicks them all out there’s no moral issue, because they’re just recent immigrants who came in because the Jews had built up the country. ![]() And it was very popular-it got literally hundreds of rave reviews, and no negative reviews: the Washington Post, the New York Times, everybody was just raving about it. It was a big scholarly-looking book with lots of footnotes, which purported to show that the Palestinians were all recent immigrants. How many of you know about Joan Peters, the book by Joan Peters? There was this best-seller a few years ago, it went through about ten printings, by a woman named Joan Peters-or at least, signed by Joan Peters-called From Time Immemorial. ![]() I’ll tell you another, last case-and there are many others like this. People we meet on vacation genre5/30/2023 ![]() Poppy has everything she should want, but she’s stuck in a rut. ![]() Until two years ago, when they ruined everything. For most of the year they live far apart-she’s in New York City, and he’s in their small hometown-but every summer, for a decade, they have taken one glorious week of vacation together. And somehow, ever since a fateful car share home from college many years ago, they are the very best of friends. She has insatiable wanderlust he prefers to stay home with a book. Not going to write a long review on this, because honestly, there is nothing to write. The common thing between both these novels is that both are in the romance genre, both are rated & reviewed very highly & I hated reading both of them.I would just boycott reading romance novels if not for the 5 Romance Books I have to read for my 2021 Reading Challenge. I had read the author’s debut novel ‘ Beach Read’ last year. I had been wanting to read this book for a long time for reasons unknown. I finished reading Emily Henry’s ‘People We Meet on Vacation’. ![]() Hi Readers! How are you all doing? With cyclone & power outages these past few days, I was able to read a little more than I can during a workweek. ![]()

First edition robinson crusoe5/30/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() It is generally seen as a contender for the first English novel. The story has been thought to be based on the life of Alexander Selkirk, a Scottish castaway who lived for four years on a Pacific island called "Más a Tierra", now part of Chile, which was renamed Robinson Crusoe Island in 1966.ĭespite its simple narrative style, Robinson Crusoe was well received in the literary world and is often credited as marking the beginning of realistic fiction as a literary genre. The first edition credited the work's protagonist Robinson Crusoe as its author, leading many readers to believe he was a real person and the book a travelogue of true incidents.Įpistolary, confessional, and didactic in form, the book is presented as an autobiography of the title character (whose birth name is Robinson Kreutznaer), a castaway who spends 28 years on a remote tropical desert island near Trinidad, encountering cannibals, captives, and mutineers, before ultimately being rescued. Robinson Crusoe is a novel by Daniel Defoe, first published on 25 April 1719. ![]()

Winter in the blood book5/29/2023 ![]() ![]() Of course, that's just the surface of the narrative, and there is a rich subtext teeming underneath with plenty of reflections and analogies around themes relating earth, man, nature, sex, direction, animals, etc., not necessarily in that order. The guy needs to thaw out, and the novel covers a few days or a week during which that process starts to take place. His brain is stuck to frozen memories like a tongue on an icicle it's too painful to just rip it off and nobody is around with the warm water. He's alternately unguided and misguided as he sluggishly tries to go forward. ![]() The young (well, 32, as he often points out) main character's life is pretty much on ice. Welch's title for this novel, his first, sets the tone. The stories just kind of happen, pulling you in (matter-of-fact, whatever) so you don't so much as plunge in but float along and finally end up thinking about them long after you've turned the last page.Īt any rate, that's the way they work on me. There is no visible effort to command your attention - no showy passages, no plot-bending events - just a slow-rolling flow of pages that sometimes don't even seem to have been written. ![]() This was my fourth James Welch novel and I still can't pin down what it is about his writing that I find so affecting. ![]()

The devotion of suspect x5/29/2023 ![]() ![]() This book is like a mind-absorbing narration of moves and countermoves of speed chess between two grand-masters, and the commentator is himself a very learned observer who can delve deep into their minds and translate stuff as it happens for laymen like us. Well, the book really lived up to its reputation. Why not? When I was referred this book, I was told that I won’t be able to keep it down once I start it.
